Scotland Yard issued a series of extraordinary images of a new blue laser “weapon” that is being used against helicopters and other aircraft flying over London.

While most laser beams are green, experts say blue lights can be more dangerous because it is difficult to accurately assess their power.

Authorities say the lasers, which are about the size of a pen and only need two AA batteries, can cause extreme dazzling and temporary blindness

In one image, said to be one of the “first blue light attacks on our aircraft”, officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Air Support Unit capture the extent of the blinding flash from several miles away.

Taken on the first day of the London Olympics, it was used as evidence in the trial of Adnan Bukhari, 21, a former G4S employee, who was later jailed for six months after admitting recklessly endangering an aircraft.

The images were released this week amid mounting concern over the number of attacks on aircraft flying over the capital and officers warned of a new crackdown.

The Met's helicopters have been fitted with equipment, including night vision which can identify exactly where lasers are being fired from.

Officials say the pictures were published out of “frustration” from officers. There are around 50 attacks a year against police helicopters.

Acting inspector Richard Brandon told The Daily Telegraph that most offenders were either pranksters who did not realise the seriousness of their actions or residents annoyed at the helicopter's presence.

The head of the Met's Air Support Unit, said there was no evidence to suggest it was "organised criminality".

"It is massive shock for many to be told that when they press that laser button they are committing a criminal offence and we are taking them down to the police station," he said.

"They have not thought through how dangerous their actions may be."

The British Airline Pilots Association said the problem was getting worse with more than 2,000 reported incidents every year against all types of aircraft.

“There are incidents involving aircraft approaching airports across the country and it is extremely dangerous. Pilots can easily be disorientated by laser attacks," he said.

Rheinmetall's 50kW high-energy laser weapon successfully passes ...
